Staring at the Sun
04:41
|
|||
i get a little lost sometimes
i get a little in my head
i try to read between the lines
but i never was well read
i used to live in arkansas
i used to live where skies were blue
i used to live above the law
now i live apart from you
cause the daughter of the pastor
caught me staring at the sun
and she rubbed my wounds with castor oil
until my sight was gone
cause if you can't look into my eyes
then no one will again
i'll go until the last light dies
for you my only friend
i don't have windows in my room
i don't have nothing on my floor
i don't believe i'll see you soon
there's nothing left for me no more
i've never been so in love
i've never been so alone
you said that you had business to take care of up above
and you went out and left me on my own
i only wish that you had stayed
i ride the roads we used to roam
i won't allow this dream to fade
i'll keep it safe till you come home
rivers run through distant lands
they go until they reach the sea
and i stretch out my weary hands
but nothing ever comes to me
i'll go and i won't compromise
this will not be the end

Songbird
04:14
|
|||
you were a sparrow perched in my soul
and i was an eagle who swallowed you whole
and you didn't stop singing from deep down inside
and the song you were singing rang out in the cold
oh my dear little bird i will always be there for you
i will shelter your broken heart under my wing
oh my dear little bird i will always take care of you
whatever the winter may bring
you were a thundercloud hemorrhaging snow
and i was a glacier titanic and slow
and the tears you were shedding fell softly beside me
and i melted to carry them where they would go
oh my dear little thundercloud pour out your heart to me
i will pick up your pieces and gather your things
through the cycle that binds us oh you are a part of me
whatever the winter may bring
you were the north wind that howled through the wood
and i was the mountain that silently stood
and you whistled and screamed but i made you abide me
and kept you around me as long as i could
and when the wind cries out in pain and in fury
i will bear out your anger from autumn to spring
i will be here as long as your heart can endure me
whatever the winter may bring

Nation
03:36
|
|||
start building a nation
start building a nation on top of your own
when the first one collapses don't let it be all you have known
and keep a good journal
it might be an imperfect look at the past
but when the rabbit-hole collapses you gotta stare into the looking-glass
the white eyes of a gas mask
a cold unseeing stare
shadows inverted by atoms dissolved in the air
the future i give you
you're a slave to its tide
there's a war out there on the horizon with only one side
and keep to your garden
learn how to give and receive from the earth
cause sooner or later you'll be farming for all that you're worth
and live near your loved ones
or find a nice town and make up a plan
when you're building a nation you take all the love that you can
cause when they drop the atom bomb the rich ones will survive
they'll hide inside their bunkers but they won't really be alive
cause when they leave in fifty years they'll wish that they'd stayed his
cause we'll have built a nation baby
and we'll know what they did
start building a nation
start building a nation on top of your own
cause the future is dark but it sure isn't written in stone
start building a nation
start building a nation on top of your own
cause i love you so much and i don't wanna do it alone

The Sharpshooter
04:31
|
|||
the family of groundhogs in your father's yard
the row of coca-cola cans, a firing squad
you put your sister's eye out when you were just fourteen
but she was still the prettiest sight the boys had ever seen
the black bear in the driveway on a cold december night
the rattlesnake that hissed but never got the chance to bite
you remember when they laid her broken body down to rest
a faded scar across one eye and roses on her dress
well you can't hit what you can't see
and no one told you who you'd be
the knight in shining armor standing guard over the land
holding daddy's rifle in her hand
you never took a lover never took no other name
you never left your hometown, you wear your hair the same
she told you she forgave you but you always called her bluff
nothing you could ever do could ever be enough
the rifle was your father's but the parts have been replaced
and you have long forgotten every feature of her face
all that you remember is the casket where she lay
and what you wish you'd said to her that day

Thelma and Louise
05:17
|
|||
we could marry on a whim
i'll quit my job and move back to new york and maybe you'll break up with him
no never mind
you shouldn't look for answers if you don't wanna live with what you'll find
could always leave the state
but i don't know who you are or what you want or how long you're willing to wait
and i don't like the way it ends
i'm not content to live like this but i'm not brave enough to make amends
i wanna go out supernova
i wanna go out like a star
i wanna leave the earth with you and fly right up to heaven in my car
like at the end of grease
or thelma and louise
it's hard to tell sometimes
i'll always love you no matter how
i told myself i'd wait a year to tell you but i think i'm ready now
kept it locked away
if i die before i'm old your name will be the last thing that i say
you were on a different track
we went down our separate roads to find that there was no way to go back
and i dream about the day
when all the things that made us scared are gone and we are finally both okay
and we'll have each other
i hope to heaven
but it's hard to tell sometimes
